Shorter days, colder weather and unpredictable conditions mean a little extra planning goes a long way. Before Moving Day
Book your removal company early. Autumn and winter weekends fill up quickly, especially in the run up to the festive season. Confirm your date well in advance and ask whether your removal firm has a backup plan for bad weather.
Check the weather forecast. Rain, frost and early darkness can all affect moving day logistics. If heavy rain or ice is forecast, consider laying down protective flooring at the entrance to your new home and keeping a supply of towels handy.
Sort your utilities. Set up gas, electricity, water and broadband ahead of time so you’re not left without heating or hot water on your first night. Winter is not the time to discover a delay in your energy connection.
Update your address. Notify banks, subscriptions, your GP and the DVLA. Redirect your post through Royal Mail so nothing important goes missing during the transition.
Pack a “first night” box. Include bedding, toiletries, phone chargers, a torch, basic tools and something warm to wear. If it gets dark early or the heating takes a while to kick in, you’ll want these within easy reach.
On Moving Day
Dress for the weather. Layers, sturdy footwear and waterproofs make carrying boxes in and out far more manageable when it’s cold or wet outside.
Protect your floors. New builds often have fresh carpets or flooring. Lay down mats or covers near doorways to catch mud, water and grit from outside.
Keep pathways clear. If frost or ice is a possibility, grit or salt your driveway and any steps beforehand to avoid slips while carrying boxes.
Check your heating. Turn the heating on early so your new home is warm by the time you arrive with your belongings. It also gives you a chance to make sure everything is working properly before you need it.
Have hot drinks ready. A flask of tea or coffee makes a real difference for you and anyone helping you move.
Settling In
Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. With heating systems working harder in colder months, it’s worth confirming these are fitted and functioning from day one.
Locate your stopcock and fuse box. Useful information to have on hand in case of any winter weather related issues, such as a burst pipe.
Bleed your radiators. If any radiators feel cooler at the top than the bottom, bleeding them will help your heating system run efficiently.
Introduce yourself to neighbours. Community matters even more in winter when everyone tends to stay indoors more. A quick hello goes a long way toward feeling settled.
Plan for dark evenings. Consider outdoor lighting near your entrance and driveway, both for safety and to help you feel at home sooner.
